Hip-hop legend Nas is celebrating his 53rd birthday today, marking more than three decades as one of the genre’s most respected and influential figures.
Born Nasir Jones on September 14, 1973, Nas spent much of his childhood in Queensbridge, New York, and began recording as a teenager before gaining attention with his appearance on Main Source’s “Live at the Barbeque.”
His career took off with the release of his debut album Illmatic in 1994. Featuring production from DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Q-Tip, the album is widely regarded as one of the most influential recordings in hip-hop history.
Nas followed with It Was Written in 1996 and later joined The Firm alongside AZ and Foxy Brown. More than 30 years after his debut, Nas remains an influential figure in hip-hop, with a career spanning multiple generations.
